The Vail Valley Salvation Army serves low-income families and individuals,
offering emergency aid in a capacity not offered by other help
agencies in the valley. Utilizing our bi-lingual caseworker and working
with collaborative agencies, we are able to refer emergency situations to
the appropriate alternate agency for the sort of continued assistance that
fosters self-sufficiency.
The Salvation Army addresses each individual situation and is able
to offer immediate assistance in most cases. The holidays are one of our
busiest times.
One volunteer’s story as told to us last Christmas makes the case succinctly:
“I was very apprehensive upon driving up to a home in Minturn where
l was to deliver my Adopt-A-Family Christmas gifts. I didn’t know the
family and they didn’t know me.
“Driving up I saw three small faces pressed to a plastic window anticipating
my arrival. Entering the small home I felt like Santa Claus bearing
gifts. The family had no tree, no Christmas lights and no gifts. The children
shared a bed and blankets covered the broken windows.
“The family had been getting by; however, the mother could no longer
work due to a severe medical situation with a younger child. The father
was working two full-time jobs. The family did not have adequate food,
blankets or clothing. I arranged for additional food to be delivered to the
family.”
This volunteer contacted Salvation Army who paid the rent for one
month, arranged with the landlord to have the windows repaired and with
the help of a local bank paid some of the outstanding medical bills.
The family eventually was able to move to affordable housing. This
case is one of many; the need shows why our volunteers keep returning
year after year.
